3. Collective Noun - اسم جمع

اسم جمع به صورت مفرد بکار می‌رود اما معنی جمع می‌دهد. و به گروهی از افراد یا اشیا اشاره دارد.

معمولاً اسم‌های جمع جزء اسم‌های غیرقابل شمارش می‌باشند.

For example:

Tables, chairs, cupboards etc. are grouped under the collective noun furniture.
Plates, saucers, cups and bowls are grouped under the collective noun crockery.(ظروف)

وقتی یک گروه (به تقسیم بندی زیر توجه کنید) به صورت یک واحد در نظر گرفته می‌شود همراه با فعل و ضمیر مفرد به کار می‌رود:

Groups of people - army, audience, band, choir, class, committee, crew, family, gang, jury, orchestra, police, staff, team, trio

Groups of animals - colony, flock, herd, pack, pod, school, swarm

Groups of things - bunch, bundle, clump, pair, set, stack

For example - The committee has reached its decision.

اما اگر اعضای گروه مورد تاکید باشند، در انگلیسی انگلستان از فعل و ضمیر جمع استفاده می‌شود.

For example - "The committee have been arguing all morning."

جمله معادل "The people in the committe have been ...."

توجه کنید که ممکنه که خود اسم جمع، جمع بسته شود که دز این صورت با فعل و ضمیر جمع بکار می‌رود:

This committee ... منظور یک کمیته است ---

These committees ... منظور چند کمیته است ---
